How to make cross stitch Christmas baubles

Step one

Cut our stitched piece leaving a 1.5cm (½in) seam allowance all the way around.

Step two

Cut a coordinating backing fabric to the same size, using your cut-out stitched piece as a template.

Step three

Fold your ribbon or cord in half to create a loop. Ours uses cord made with the Kreinik Custom Corder. Pin the ends of your cord at the top of the stitched piece, making sure the loop lies downwards.

Step four

Pin together front and back pieces with right sides facing and the loop tucked inside. Machine- or hand-stitch with a 1cm (¼in) seam allowance, leaving a small gap at the bottom. Turn through and press.

Step five

Fill your decoration firmly with wadding, then slip stitch the gap closed for a neat finish.

Rhona Norrie

Rhona Norrie is a prolific and popular cross stitch designer from Scotland who now calls New York home. Her work is regularly featured in magazines including The World of Cross Stitching, Cross Stitch Crazy, and Just Cross Stitch. Rhona is a total cross stitch addict! If she doesn’t have a needle in her hand, then it will be a camera that she’s carrying to capture the wonders of nature and she shares her nature pictures (and cross stitching!) on her Facebook and Instagram accounts. “I don’t have a specific favourite thing to stitch, but I do love – and I know many people will be surprised at this – French Knots! I took me ages to learn how to do them… then even more time to be able to do them consistently, but they are definitely worth mastering.”
